How to Fix Stick Drift on a PS5 Controller Without Opening It: The Complete UK Guide

Stick drift means your PS5 controller registers movement when you are not touching the sticks. You can often fix it without opening the controller. The four methods, in order, are: reset and update the controller software, compressed air, an isopropyl alcohol clean, and raising the deadzone in your game settings. If none helps, Sony’s 12-month UK guarantee may cover you, and a replacement DualSense costs £59.99 at Currys at the time of writing.

What Stick Drift Actually Is

Stick drift is unwanted movement of your on-screen character or camera when you are not touching the thumbsticks. Your character walks left on its own, or the camera slowly spins, and you are not pressing anything.

The cause is wear inside the stick module. Each thumbstick sits on a potentiometer, a small sensor that reads the stick position as it moves. Its contacts wear down with use, the readings become noisy, and the console sees movement that is not really there. The wear is mechanical, so it only gets worse: mild drift sometimes responds to cleaning, heavy drift does not.

Before You Start: The 2-Minute Drift Test

First, confirm it is drift and not a game setting. Open the PS5 home screen and watch the menus. If the cursor moves on its own with the controller sitting still, it is drift, not the game.

For a proper check, use a free online gamepad tester in a desktop or phone browser. Connect the controller by USB or Bluetooth and watch the stick position readout: any movement at rest confirms drift. Note which stick drifts and how far. Mild drift near the centre responds well to cleaning; a stick stuck at full deflection is usually worn out.

Fix 1: Reset the Controller and Update Its Software

Turn the PS5 off or unplug the controller. Find the small pinhole on the back of the DualSense next to the Sony logo. Press the button inside with a paperclip for about 5 seconds, then reconnect with the USB cable and press the PS button to re-pair.

Next, check for a controller software update. On the PS5 go to Settings, then Accessories, then Controller (General), then DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software, and install anything it offers.

One warning: some guides tell you to open Settings, then Devices, then Controllers, and calibrate the sticks there. That screen does not exist on the PS5. There is no system-level stick calibration on PlayStation 5, so any guide promising one is written for a different console.

Honest odds: a reset fixes software glitches, not physical wear. Worth five minutes.

Fix 2: The Compressed Air Clean

Dust and crumbs around the stick base are the most common cause of mild drift. Hold the can of compressed air upright and keep the nozzle a few centimetres from the base of the drifting stick. Use short bursts, not one long blast, and tilt and rotate the stick between bursts so the air reaches under the rubber cap from every side.

Never spray with the can upside down: liquid propellant can damage the electronics. Never use a hairdryer or press a vacuum nozzle against the sticks.

Honest odds: good for controllers that started drifting after dusty storage or crumbs near the sticks. Poor for controllers with thousands of hours on them, where the problem is wear, not dirt.

Fix 3: The Isopropyl Alcohol Clean

This is the method most likely to revive a drifting stick without opening the controller. Buy 70% isopropyl alcohol, the standard strength sold in UK pharmacies and supermarkets. Dampen a cotton swab. Do not soak it, and never spray liquid directly into the controller. Work the damp swab around the base of the drifting stick, pressing the stick gently in each direction so the alcohol reaches the contacts underneath.

Let the controller dry fully before switching it on, at least 15 to 20 minutes in a ventilated room, and keep the alcohol away from flames as you would with any solvent.

Honest odds: this often buys weeks or months of normal play, but cleaning removes dirt, not wear. Drift that returns within days means the contacts are worn through.

Fix 4: Adjust the Deadzone

A deadzone is a small area around the stick centre that the game ignores. Raising it tells the game to ignore tiny phantom movements, which can make a mildly drifting controller fully playable again. Many shooters, racing games and sports games include a deadzone slider in their controller or accessibility settings. Raise it a little at a time until the phantom movement stops, but stop before the sticks feel unresponsive.

The PS5 has no system-wide deadzone setting, so you set this per game. It masks the symptom rather than fixing it, but for mild drift it can keep a controller in service for a long time.

When Cleaning Will Not Work: The Honest Replacement Point

Stop cleaning and start replacing when the drift returns within days of a careful alcohol clean, the stick reads full deflection with no touch, or the stick feels gritty or loose. These point to a worn-out potentiometer, and no non-invasive method can rebuild worn contacts.

Your options are a new controller or one with replaceable parts. Standard DualSense controllers cost £59.99 at Currys at the time of writing, and deal trackers have recently spotted standard colours around £42.99 on Amazon UK. The DualSense Edge is the premium route, with stick modules that swap out without soldering. Heavy players may also look at Hall effect sticks, which use magnets instead of contacts and do not wear the same way. Check the warranty section above before paying for a mail-in cleaning service: a free Sony repair beats both.

UK Warranty and Repair Options

Sony UK guarantees the DualSense free from defects for 12 months from the date of original purchase. Within that window, start a claim on the PlayStation Repairs page at playstation.com: Sony emails a returns reference, you pack the controller alone with no cables, attach the shipping label, and drop it at a post office or drop-off point. Sony aims to return it within 15 days.

Outside the 12 months, UK buyers still have rights. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods must be of satisfactory quality, and a controller that develops drift after light use can count as faulty. It costs nothing to ask the retailer, especially within the first year or two. See also our guide to your right to repair in the UK.

Note: opening the controller yourself risks voiding the Sony warranty, which is why every method in this guide keeps it sealed.

Preventing Drift Coming Back

Keep the controller in a clean, dry place, keep food and drinks away while you play, and dust it monthly with a quick pass of compressed air around the stick bases. Dust is the enemy of all electronics: see our guide on how often you should clean your laptop fans. Thumbstick covers are a cheap extra that keep debris out, though they cannot stop internal wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PS5 stick drift covered under warranty?

Yes, within Sony UK’s 12-month guarantee, provided you have not opened the controller. Start the claim on the PlayStation Repairs page at playstation.com.

Can you fix stick drift without opening the controller?

Often, yes. These four methods fix many cases of mild drift; deep wear needs part replacement.

Does cleaning permanently fix stick drift, or will it come back?

Cleaning removes dirt, not wear. A good clean often lasts weeks or months. If drift returns within days, the stick contacts are worn out.

Does PS5 stick drift get worse over time?

Yes. The wear inside the stick module is mechanical, so it progresses with use.

Will resetting the controller erase my game saves?

No. Game saves live on the console or in cloud storage, not in the controller.

How long does a DualSense last before drift starts?

There is no official figure. Heavy daily players can see drift within a year; lighter use lasts much longer.

The Bottom Line

Work through the fixes in order: reset and software check, compressed air, the alcohol clean, then deadzone settings. Most mild drift yields to one of these. If it keeps coming back, use Sony’s 12-month UK guarantee before spending a penny, and buy from a UK retailer with a proper returns policy when you do replace.
